ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sergei Nikolaev was born in 1957 in Dnepropetrovsk, in eastern Ukraine. In 1958-91 he lived in Zaporozhye.
Since 1991 he has been living in Moscow.
In 1974-79 he studied at the Zaporozhye Machine-Building Institute. He became interested in photography in 1977 and in 1979 became a member of Zaporozhye photo club. Since 1980 he taught photography to children.
In 1982-91 he worked as a photographer in NIIOGaz and Trust "Zaporozhelektromontazh" in Zaporozhye.
In 1991 Sergei moved to Moscow and from 1992 to 2000 taught photography to children. He worked with the newspaper "Salvation" (1992-1994), the publishing house "Kommersant" (1994-1999), the newspaper "Vedomosti" (1999-2010) and many other media.
Since 1991 he has been a member of the Union of Photographers of Russia and Ukraine.
In 2006 he created the internet project www.photo-xyz.ru (for 101 kilometers), whose participants were: Alexander Shchemlyaev, Alexander Sigidin, Vladimir Filonov, Evgeny Kompanichenko, Maxim Dmitriev, Marlen Matus, Semyon Prosyak, Sergey Chilikov, Sergei Nikolaev. In 2016, the project was closed.
In 2012-17 he collaborated with the theater.
Since 2017 an independent photographer. He shot his own projects in Ukraine, Russia, Italy.
Since 2018 member of the Creative Union Noga.
Since 1979 Sergei Nikolaev has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Denmark, Russia, USA and Belarus.
Sergei Nikolaev's works are in the collections of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow, Russia), the State Russian Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia), MMAM (Moscow, Russia), Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan).
