ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sergey Maximishin was born in 1964 in the village of Kodyma, Odessa region. He graduated from school in 1982 in Kerch, Crimea. In the same year he entered the Faculty of Physics and Mechanics of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute.

From 1985 to 1987 he served in the Soviet Army as a photographer of the military club of the Group of Soviet military specialists in Cuba. In 1988 he returned to the Institute and combined his studies with work in the laboratory of scientific and technical expertise of the State Hermitage. From 1991 to 1998 he worked as director of a real estate company. From 1996 to 1998 he studied at the Faculty of Photo Correspondents at the St. Petersburg House of Journalists.

From 1999 to 2003 he worked as a photographer for the Izvestia newspaper.

Since 2003 he has been working with Focus Agency, Germany, and since 2006 with Panos Pictures, UK. As a photojournalist he has worked with Izvestia, Ogonyok, Itogi, Komsomolskaya Pravda, Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Moskovsky Komsomolets, Stern, Time, Geo, Business Week, Focus, Corriere della Sera, The Washington Post, The Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Liberation, Parool, Der Profile.

Multiple prize-winner of the Press Photo of Russia and World Press Photo contests.

In 2007 he published the book "The Last Empire. Twenty Years Later", in 2015 (second edition in 2021) the book "100 Photos" was published, in 2019 the book "Memory Map".

His works have been exhibited at more than 30 solo exhibitions in France, Italy, Germany, USA, Brazil, Russia, Netherlands, Ukraine and other countries. Photographs are in collections: FNAC (Fondation Nationale d'Art Contemporain, France), Nicéphore Niépce Museum (France), Centre International de Photojournalisme (France), The Houston Museum of Fine Arts, USA.

Teaches photography at the Tsekh school.
